PIV SERVICES
PIVS OKLAHOMA – PIV SERVICES OKLAHOMA
PIVs Oklahoma, or Peripheral IVs, are the most common standard lines used for gaining vascular access. Vascular access is essential to patient care, and many medical treatments begin with establishing intravenous access, with the most basic IV Access being the Peripheral IV (or PIV). As such, nearly all patients admitted to a hospital will receive a PIV from a nurse.
Some patients are difficult IV access (DIVA) patients and in those cases, unfortunately, they often experience multiple painful sticks before a vascular access team is called to use their advanced training and ultrasound equipment to properly place the PIV. This occurs most frequently in an ICU, CCU, Emergency Department or other similar units where co-morbidities make vein access hard, such as in the case where other medications can cause vein contractions.
PiccPros/Vascular Wellness exclusively uses ultrasound guidance to place all vascular access lines, including PIVs. This provides the clinician not only vein visualization but also needle visualtization, which means the vascular access clinician can clearly and accurately see the vein and exactly where the needle is, ensuring success the first time. It also ensures the needle enters the vein once and does not accidentally exit the other side, resulting in a failed stick.
PIV ACCESS
PIV OKLAHOMA – PIV SERVICES OKLAHOMA
PIV insertion sites can vary significantly, depending on both the skill of the person performing the procedure and the patient’s vein availability. The ideal location for a PIV is the forearm, as it minimizes irritation and avoids areas of flexion. PIV catheters come in various sizes and configurations, but typically consist of a small, short plastic tube that is inserted into the vein over a needle, with the needle removed after placement. In some patient conditions, certain areas may need to be avoided, either due to the need to preserve those sites for future procedures or because previous surgeries may make those areas unsuitable. Even with a “basic” PIV, a thorough assessment of the patient and medical record prior to beginning any procedure is essential to ensure the clinically appropriate device and access site are used.
Unlike other mobile companies, at Vascular Wellness, we pride ourselves in performing thorough assessments in all cases, including PIVs in Oklahoma. Additionally, any skin puncture can introduce infection, so meticulous skin preparation is crucial to prevent complications and help ensure successful access on the first attempt.

PIV ACCESS
PIV USE
PIVS OKLAHOMA – PIV USE OKLAHOMA
PIV Use in Oklahoma and elsewhere is clinically appropriate in the following situations:
• The prescribed therapy is suitable for peripheral access and will not harm small veins.
• The patient has peripheral veins large enough to support a PIV.
• The patient’s veins are accessible without the need for repeated needle punctures.
• The therapy is short-term and does not require a longer-term device.
Peripheral IVs can be placed without a Vascular Access Expert such as PiccPros/Vascular Wellness; however, in the case of a DIVA patient or other challenging situations, calling on an expert will improve patient outcomes and satisfaction by reducing or eliminating failed sticks, and reduce costs by eliminating wasted supplies from failed attempts and reducing treatment delays.

What is a Peripheral IV?
A Peripheral IV (PIV) is the simplest and least invasive method for obtaining vascular access. It should only be used when clinically appropriate, specifically for infusions into smaller peripheral veins and for short-term therapies. Ultrasound guidance is the preferred method and gold standard for placing PIVs to ensure the needle enters the vein and does not exit the other side. When ultrasound guidance is not used, the clinician cannot see if the needle has made a second puncture, which can cause dangerous medication leaks from the vein into the tissue, which are known as infiltrations and extravasations.
