PICC Services Oklahoma describes both vascular access services in general and PICC Lines in particular. Generally speaking, the phrase PICC Services if often used synonymously with the term Vascular Access Services, to include standard lines such as Ultrasound Guided PIVs, Midlines, PICCs, and sometimes advanced central lines such as Internal Jugulars and Mid-Thigh Femorals, for example.
Most mobile providers are skilled only in the placement of standard lines, but Vascular Wellness is different. For more than a decade, Vascular Wellness has been innovating vascular access at the patient’s bedside with Pediatric lines and advanced central lines including Small Bore Internal Jugular Lines, Mid-Thigh Femoral Lines, and Axillary Lines, Large Bore Lines, Tunneled Central Lines, and Acute/Temp and Permanent Dialysis Catheters, and provides program management, education and training, and infection control consulting.
Unlike other mobile companies, Vascular Wellness uses PICC Services to mean PICC Lines and not the more comprehensive Vascular Access Services. The remainder of this page is focused on the specific type of vascular access device called PICC Lines.
PICC LINE
PICC SERVICES OKLAHOMA – PICC LINE OKLAHOMA
A PICC Line generally starts in a vein just above the elbow to mitigate risk of infection, and weaves around the shoulder to inside the Superior Vena Cava (SVC), a vein just above the heart. The Modified Seldinger Technique (MST) is typically used for correct placement, and the line insertion must be confirmed prior to use, as the PICC Line is inserted near the heart. PICC Line Insertion can be confirmed via Electrocardiogram (ECG) Tip Confirmation technology or via X-Ray. ECG is more convenient and efficient because, when clinically available, it often removes the need to wait for X-rays to be arranged, performed, and evaluated, saving both the cost of the X-rays as well as preventing often lengthy delays in therapy. In Oklahoma, some mobile PICC Services offer and promote non-ECG PICC Line placement so that they can appear to be less expensive due to cheaper supplies, while in fact, they are more expensive when taking into account the cost of the X-ray (the taking and reading of such X-ray). Additionally, that doesn’t even include the reputational hit of exposing the patient to delays and unnecessary radiation. These mobile PICC Services are not being transparent or innovative in their approach and delivery of services.

PICC Line Use is clinically appropriate as follows:
• pH IV medications or fluids with extremes of pH
• TPN – Total Parenteral Nutrition, a method of getting nutrition into the body through the veins
• CVP – Central Venous Pressure Monitoring, the most accurate blood pressure reading available
• Extended vascular access need > 5 days
While PICC Line Uses are many, they are particularly valuable when the IV medications or fluids may irritate veins or when medications are to be given over a longer period of time. PICC Lines can have more than 1 lumen, meaning that they can handle multiple medications with each medication being given in a separate lumen to avoid mixing. In Oklahoma, some mobile PICC Services do not offer single, double, and triple lumen lines because they choose to have their nurses carry less inventory to save money, even if it means not having the ability to insert the most appropriate line.
It is especially important for your vascular access provider to not only know when a PICC Line is contraindicated, but also to be able to place an alternate vascular access device that is safe for the patient in that SAME visit, eliminating dangerous risks and delays and unnecessary added costs. Contraindications include mastectomy with lymph node removal, renal disease, and history of pulmonary embolisms, to name a few.
